title: The Conference Was Never the Brand
description: Most college sports fans never tracked realignment. That gap tells athletic departments where their brand equity actually lives, and always did.

# The Conference Was Never the Brand

A marketing director opens the 2027 football schedule and finds a column of opponents nobody on campus has a feeling about. The rivalry that used to anchor the season is gone, or moved, or now happens every third year. The instinct is to treat this as an emergency and start manufacturing something to replace it.

Before spending a cycle on that, it is worth checking whether the fans noticed.

### The Fans Mostly Didn’t

The survey work from the peak realignment period is not what the industry assumes. SSRS, which polls more than 24,000 Americans annually on sports, found that **more than half of college sports fans were not aware conference realignment was happening at all**. Among those who were aware, the most common answer was that it had no impact on their interest.

A Sportico/Harris poll from August 2023 found the same shape. Asked directly, 68% of college sports followers agreed realignment was a problem — the number usually quoted. But asked what it actually did to them, the answers went the other way.

Effect on enjoyment of college sports

US adults familiar with conference realignment. Sportico/The Harris Poll, August 2023.

| No impact | 55% |
| --- | --- |
| Enhanced their enjoyment | 26% |
| Diminished their enjoyment | 18% |

More people said realignment made college sports better than said it made them worse.

Both things are true at once, and the gap between them is the useful part. People will call realignment a problem when you put the word in front of them. It did not change what they do on Saturday. That is the signature of an issue that matters enormously inside the building and very little outside it.

### Which Means the Conference Was Never Carrying the Weight

This is worth sitting with, because it inverts the usual framing. If conference identity had been doing the emotional work — if “SEC speed” and “Big Ten grit” were load-bearing rather than broadcast vocabulary — then dismantling those conferences would have shown up as a measurable drop in fan interest. It didn’t.

The loss was real, but it was institutional rather than personal. Scott Barnes, then Oregon State’s athletic director, put it plainly to *The Oregonian* in August 2023 as the Pac-12 came apart: “The great history and tradition of this conference has been severely damaged.” He was right, and he was speaking as an administrator watching a hundred years of shared infrastructure dissolve. The fan in section 114 was experiencing something much smaller.

Conference affiliation was mostly a media construct — a way of bundling inventory for a cable ecosystem that no longer exists in that form. When the bundle broke, the thing it had been holding together turned out not to be fan loyalty.

“…the brand value of every individual institution is more important than ever before.”

— Trev Alberts, then Athletic Director, University of Nebraska
*Lincoln Journal Star*, August 2023

Alberts got there through media economics rather than sentiment, which is what makes it useful. His argument was that cord-cutting broke the bundle that had made conference membership valuable, and streaming pushes the weight back onto the individual school. The brand that has to carry revenue now is yours, not your conference’s.

So the prescription everyone is reaching for — invest in institutional identity — is right. But it is not damage control, and framing it that way gets the strategy wrong. Nothing was taken from you. Realignment just removed a layer that was obscuring where the equity always sat.

### What Actually Changes on Saturday

Less than you would think, which is the point. If you are already building game presentation around your own program—its records, its traditions, the people in your own stands—realignment does not require you to change course. We have written before about why [tradition, locality and belonging are the product on campus](https://hub.emissivelabs.com/blog/what-not-to-copy-from-the-nfl-moves-that-backfire-on-campus), and that argument does not need restating here.

What does change is how you should think about *opponent-dependent* inventory. Any recurring segment that only works against a particular rival is fragile in a way it was not ten years ago, because the schedule is now a variable rather than a constant. A hype package built around a specific opponent has a shelf life tied to a media rights cycle you do not control. A segment built around your own program—a decade-by-decade poll of its best moments, a record that gets chased every season, an alumni thread that runs through every home game—does not expire when the conference map is redrawn again.

And it will be redrawn again. That is the planning assumption worth adopting. The departments that will be steady through the next round are the ones whose game-day identity does not depend on knowing who is on the schedule — the same logic that makes [flexible venue investment beat fixed capital projects](https://hub.emissivelabs.com/blog/conference-realignments-ripple-effect-on-venue-capital-planning) under the same uncertainty.

The honest version of the realignment story is less dramatic than the one being told. Your fans did not lose their attachment to your school; most of them never transferred it to the conference in the first place. The work now is not to rebuild something that broke. It is to stop paying rent on a brand you never owned.
